SmartNest is a free set of home improvement cost calculators built for US homeowners who want a realistic starting budget before they start calling contractors. Whether you're wondering what a new roof costs, budgeting for a kitchen remodel, or comparing fence materials, our goal is to give you a quick, honest low-to-high price range so you can plan with confidence — without having to request a dozen quotes just to get a ballpark number.
We built SmartNest because most homeowners start a renovation project with almost no sense of what things actually cost. Contractor quotes can vary widely, pricing information online is often outdated or vague, and it's easy to either underestimate a project (and get a shock later) or overestimate it (and skip a project you could actually afford). SmartNest aims to close that gap with clear, structured estimates you can trust as a starting point.
Our methodology
Every SmartNest calculator estimates cost using the same basic structure: a low and high price per unit (per square foot, per linear foot, or per project) for each material or finish tier, multiplied by your project size, then adjusted by a regional cost-of-living factor for the Northeast, Midwest, South, West, or National Average.
Our baseline cost figures are compiled from publicly available contractor cost guides, industry pricing surveys, and reported project costs from across the United States, reflecting approximate 2025–2026 national averages. We review and update these figures regularly as material and labor costs shift, and the exact numbers behind every calculator live in a single, clearly documented data file so they can be kept current and consistent site-wide.
Regional multipliers account for the fact that labor and material costs vary significantly across the country — a kitchen remodel in the Northeast or West typically costs more than the same project in the South or Midwest, due to differences in labor rates, cost of living, and local demand.
Why estimates vary from actual quotes
No calculator, no matter how well-built, can account for everything that affects your specific project: your home's exact layout and condition, local permit and inspection fees, the availability and pricing of contractors in your specific city, unexpected issues uncovered mid-project (like water damage or outdated wiring), and the finish choices you ultimately make. Our estimates are meant to give you a realistic planning range — not a substitute for an actual bid.
We strongly recommend getting at least three quotes from licensed, insured local contractors before committing to a project budget or signing a contract. Comparing multiple quotes is the best way to understand fair pricing in your specific area and to evaluate contractors on more than just price.
